Eagles Cut McCoy, Promote Jordan, Add Kershaw

The Eagles announced on Tuesday the release of LB Matt McCoy. McCoy, a former 2005 second round draft pick, started 10 games for the Eagles last season, before he injured his shoulder. Taking McCoy's spot on the roster is Akeem Jordan. The Eagles also announced the signing of second-year LB William Kershaw to the practice squad.

The Eagles announced on Tuesday that they released former 2005 second round draft pick linebacker Matt McCoy. McCoy started 10 games last season at weak side linebacker, before he suffered a shoulder injury.

At 5-foot-11, 230-pounds, McCoy was an undersized linebacker who played hard, but didn’t have the physical attributes it took to succeed as a starter. The Eagles noticed McCoy’s physical limitations and decided to trade for Takeo Spikes during the offseason.

McCoy’s release comes two days after he committed an unnecessary penalty on special teams against the Vikings. The penalty cost the Eagles 15-yards and could have changed momentum in the game. With McCoy gone, the Eagles promoted Akeem Jordan from the practice squad.

Jordan, an undrafted free agent from James Madison, initially made the Eagles 53-man roster, but was cut after the Eagles made a few roster moves that included safety J.R. Reed and Pago Togafau. Jordan’s main contribution will come on special teams and will serve as a reserve linebacker on defense.

Taking Jordan’s spot on the practice squad is second-year linebacker William Kershaw. At 6-foot-3, 240-pounds, Kershaw, who played at Maryland, entered the league as a rookie free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006. He spent the majority of his rookie season on the Chiefs practice squad before being promoted to their 53-man roster for the final regular season game and the AFC Wild Card game at Indianapolis.

The 23-year-old Kershaw saw action in the Chiefs opening-day game at Houston this year before being released on September 19.
