Looking For A Longshot: Cornell Brockington

Posted Apr 17, 2006

Some interesting off-season football stories have come out of the University of Connecticut. There's UConn's Ed Nelson looking to make the switch from the court to the NFL and there's Cornell Brockington.

Cornell Brockington didn't get to be on one of the biggest stages that a college player gets to experience in preparation for the draft. Brockington was one of just two underclassman running backs not invited to the combine in Indianapolis. With that opportunity shot down, Brockington has had to find spots to put himself in front of NFL scouts.

For Brockington, the biggest of the stages that he'll get came on March 23rd at UConn's Pro Day. The 6', 203 pounder came away happy with his audition that was witnessed by scouts from the Eagles, Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, 49'ers, Bears, Colts, Jaguars, Browns, Giants and Panthers.

Brockington is seemingly looking for an NFL spot at the wrong time. He had a breakout season in 2004, but wasn't given an opportunity to repeat it in 2005 when Terry Caulley got most of the carries for the Huskies. Brockington was limited to just two starts and 337 yards on 85 carries. A far cry from the 238 carries and over 1,200 yards that he gained when he started ten games in 2004.

While the Eagles were at the Connecticut Pro Day, Brockington could be pretty far down on their list. He isn't much of a pass-catcher out of the backfield and isn't big enough to handle a heavy load of NFL carries, the two things that the Eagles will look for in any running backs that they could draft. As somewhat of a project, Brockington could get a very late look from the birds, or if he goes undrafted, they could take a look at him down the road. Odds are that Brockington will follow in the footsteps of other Connecticut alumns like Keron Henry and Justin Perkins, who are playing in NFL Europe this season to build their skills.

Running back is "a position of interest" for the Eagles, but not likely in the early rounds.
