Runyan Chooses Return To Philly

Posted Mar 24, 2006

After a back and forth battle over whether or not to bring back Jon Runyan, the Eagles ended the speculation by signing the veteran tackle to a three-year deal.

Jon Runyan visited the New York Jets earlier this week, but came away still wanting to re-sign in Philadelphia. Friday, he got his wish, which should allow him to finish his NFL career as an Eagle.

Runyan will look to continue his streak of 160 consecutive starts, dating back to his time with the Tennessee Titans. The streak includes 16 post-season starts to go with the 144 regular season games that he's started without a break. The regular season streak is the fourth longest in the NFL.

After signing with the Eagles as a free agent in 2000, Runyan had perhaps his best season as a pro in 2002 when he helped lead the team to a franchise-high 415 points scored and helped the Eagles to become the fourth highest scoring team in the NFL with 25.9 points per game. That season, Runyan played in the Pro Bowl as part of the Eagles contingent.

The new deal will carry Runyan through 2008 season, when he will be 35. He had said publicly that he hoped to be able to re-sign in Philadelphia to keep his family at home in New Jersey and to finish his career as a member of the Eagles.

Initially, it didn't appear that the Eagles were interested in having Runyan return and instead, pursued free agent LeCharles Bentley and former Jet Kevin Maewe. Both players signed elsewhere and slowly, the Eagles shifted back to Runyan.
