While they're not unhappy with L.J. Smith as their starting tight end, the Eagles looked for an upgrade in backing him up and found one. The signing of Matt Schobel will be announced in the next 24 to 48 hours, giving the Eagles a pass-catching type tight end to backup Smith.
Schobel had 18 catches for 193 yards and one touchdown last season with the Cincinnati Bengals and has 90 career catches - nine of them for touchdowns - in his four year career with Cincinnati.
The Eagles like Schobel's ability to find a way to get open, especially in zone coverage, and believe that he'll add a quality backup to their offense. On the downside, Schobel isn't much of a blocker and won't provide much help in that area of the game, but he should find a decent amount of time in the lineup, even without unseating Smith.
