Hot Topic and Player Notes: Eagles

It appears that Donovan McNabb has thrown his last pass this season. The Eagles quarterback met Thursday with specialist Dr. William Myers about his sports hernia. McNabb aggravated the injury late in Monday night's 21-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys when he tried to make a tackle on Cowboys safety Roy Williams, who had intercepted a pass.

McNabb had an MRI, and Myers finally got an opportunity to look at it Wednesday. According to the Eagles, Myers has recommended that McNabb not try to play anymore this season and have the surgery to repair the sports hernia.

The Eagles said McNabb is weighing his options.

That means Mike McMahon, who will get his first start as an Eagle and only his eighth NFL start Sunday against the 6-3 Giants, likely will be the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.

Koy Detmer will continue to be the backup quarterback. Tight end and long snapper Mike Bartrum currently is the club's No. 3 quarterback. But Jeff Smoker, who was signed to the practice squad Tuesday, is expected to be added to the 53-man roster as soon as McNabb is placed on injured reserve and would serve as the emergency quarterback behind McMahon and Detmer.

PLAYER NOTES

--QB Donovan McNabb's season likely is over. He aggravated his sports hernia injury in Monday night's loss to Dallas. Specialist Dr. William Myers has recommended that McNabb have surgery.

--QB Mike McMahon's first start for the Eagles on Sunday probably won't be his last. With Donovan McNabb expected to miss the remainder of the season, McMahon will be the starter as long as he plays well and as long as he stays healthy.

--QB Koy Detmer will continue to be the Eagles' backup quarterback and holder for kicker David Akers. With Donovan McNabb out, coach Andy Reid chose to elevate No. 3 QB Mike McMahon rather than Detmer.

--TE L.J. Smith still is listed as questionable with knee and ankle sprains. But he practiced Thursday, which means he'll likely play Sunday against the Giants.

--RB Lamar Gordon tweaked his ankle in Monday night's loss to the Cowboys, but practiced Thursday and is expected to play Sunday. He is listed as probable.
